Academic overview

Eastern Mediterranean University is a state university of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It grew out of the Institute of Higher Technology, which opened in 1979 with Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and 105 students, and became a state university in 1986 under Law 18/86. Today it has more than 80,000 graduates.

Its main faculties are Engineering, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Communication, Education, Law, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry and Tourism, plus several schools and the English Preparatory School. Programmes run from associate to PhD level and most are taught in English; students without a sufficient English certificate first take a one-year English preparatory programme.

Medicine is a joint programme with Marmara University (Türkiye): the first three years after the preparatory year are studied at EMU and the last three at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, and the diploma carries the signature of both faculties. Dentistry is a joint programme with the University of Health Sciences (Türkiye).

All EMU programmes are recognised by the Council of Higher Education of Türkiye (YÖK), the Higher Education Council of Northern Cyprus (YÖDAK) and UK ENIC, and the Faculty of Medicine is listed with ECFMG. According to the university, 55 programmes and the English Preparatory School are accredited by 13 international bodies, including ABET (engineering), ACPE (pharmacy), NAAB and MİAK (architecture), FIBAA (business and tourism) and TEPDAD (medicine).

EMU is ranked 601–800 in the THE World University Rankings 2026 (2nd in Northern Cyprus) and 1st in Northern Cyprus in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026. Degree recognition rules differ by country; Taktik advisers check the latest status for your programme before you enrol.
