Studying in Turkey in English: Programmes, Language Requirements and Tuition 2026–2027
Yes, you can study entirely in English in Turkey. Taktik's site lists 876 English-medium programmes with verified 2026–2027 tuition at 14 private universities in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, from medicine (from 21,000 USD in Istanbul) to engineering and business (from 4,700 USD). Entry usually requires IELTS 5.0–6.0, TOEFL or a pass in the university's own English test; without a certificate you take a one-year preparatory programme. At some universities the English track costs more than the Turkish one (for example medicine at Üsküdar: 24,000 vs 18,000 USD). Basic Turkish helps with daily life but is not a condition of study.

How many English-medium programmes are there?
Private universities in Turkey and Northern Cyprus teach a large share of their programmes in English. The programme search lists 876 English-medium programmes with verified 2026–2027 tuition, alongside 1,334 Turkish-medium and 9 "30% English" programmes. In Northern Cyprus almost everything is in English: all 35 of EMU's bachelor's programmes and most of Cyprus International University's are taught in English.
What is the language requirement?
- International certificate: IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. The usual bar is IELTS 5.0 for most programmes and 6.0 for medicine (example: EMU). Each university sets its own, and we show it on the programme page.
- The university's own test: most private universities in Istanbul run a placement test at the start of term; if you pass, you go straight into your programme.
- Preparatory year (Prep): if you have no certificate or do not pass the test, you study English for a year and then start. Each university announces its own price (EMU: 3,520–4,613 USD).
Is the English track more expensive?
At some universities yes, at others no. Official 2026–2027 examples:
| University and programme | Turkish track | English track |
|---|---|---|
| Üsküdar, Medicine | 18,000 USD | 24,000 USD |
| Okan, Dentistry | 15,000 USD | 18,000 USD |
| İstinye, Medicine | 23,000 USD | 29,000 USD |

- İstinye Turkish23,000 USD

The Turkish track is cheaper but needs a C1 Turkish certificate or a year of TÖMER.

| Field | Lowest English-track tuition per year |
|---|---|
| Medicine | 21,000 USD (Biruni) |
| Dentistry | 18,000 USD (Okan) |
| Pharmacy | 8,000 USD (Okan) |
| Computer Engineering | 4,700 USD |

In Northern Cyprus, English-medium bachelor's programmes start at 2,155 EUR (Cyprus International) and 6,400 USD after a 60% scholarship (EMU); see the cost of studying in Northern Cyprus.
Do state universities offer English programmes too?
A few: English-medium medicine at Ankara, Hacettepe and Ondokuz Mayıs (at a higher fee than the Turkish track), and several engineering and business programmes at METU, Boğaziçi and ITU that are fully in English. Entry is through the TR-YÖS or SAT exam with limited quotas; see state vs private universities.
How do I live without Turkish?
On campus and in class, English is enough. Off campus, in Istanbul and the big cities you can manage daily life in English, but basic Turkish makes life easier and cheaper. Most universities offer optional Turkish courses, and for hospital placements (medicine, nursing) Turkish becomes necessary in practice; universities usually build this into the curriculum.
